Federal Judges to Receive Home Alarms in Chicago Area
CHICAGO
Federal Judges in Chicago will soon receive a home security
system because of the murder of U.S. District Judge Joan
Lefkow’s husband and mother last year, says the Chicago
Tribune. The U.S. Marshals Service, which is charged
with the overall security of federal judges, told the
Tribune that the home security systems, which are
part of a broader effort to improve security, will be paid
for by federal money.
Improvements to security arrangements will be determined
according to increased security issues as it relates to
specific threats associated with a federal judge’s job.
This is to be accomplished by the joint collaboration of
federal and local agencies.
More than 10 percent of the $12 million provided by
Congress last year made its way to the Chicago area, says
Michael J. Prout, chief deputy U.S. Marshal in Chicago.
Prout says that most of the federal judges have expressed
an interest in receiving a home alarm system.
Work is now under way in Chicago to install home security systems for current federal judges. Nationally, more than 2,200 alarm systems have been provided under the program thus far.
