The Hudsonville City Commission will spend $80,000 to
remotely monitor the town’s water system and prevent
tampering with its water supply. University Park. Ill.’s
Federal Signal Corp. received the bid. Federal Signal’s
system will monitor everything in the water and sewer
systems, from lift stations and water pressure gauges to
water towers, The Grand Rapids Press reports.
City employees will be able to monitor the system remotely
from a central location rather than physically visiting
each water tower and lift station.
The move is an attempt to comply with standards set by the
Department of Homeland Security requiring all U.S. water
and sewer systems to be monitored.
Federal Signal’s bid was chosen over one from Wyoming-based
Communications Specialists Inc., which is owned by former
Hudsonville City Commissioner Arlen Dykema, for $85,000.
