Feds Providing $14.7 Million for Schools to Improve Security

WASHINGTON

The federal government is releasing new funds for schools nationwide to improve security, with dealers and integrators standing to benefit from the increased number of potential installations. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) says it is releasing $14.7 million in grants to enhance the safety of schools in 43 states.

The grants, awarded under the COPS Secure Our Schools (SOS) program, will be directed toward 187 local law enforcement agencies to handle the contracting for school safety enhancements. COPS will provide 50 percent of the total cost for school districts to install metal detectors, locks and other equipment to deter crime.

To obtain a pdf list of law enforcement agencies that received grants, go to the COPS Web site at www.cops.usdoj.gov.
