FORT MYERS, Fla. — Years of discussion over installing security cameras have finally led to action here.
The Fort Myers Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) unanimously voted on Wednesday to set aside $100,000 from its budget to fund and install video surveillance cameras downtown, The News-Press reports.
Don Paight, director of the CRA, said the city has 40 potential locations for the cameras with an estimated cost of $300,000.
The CRA’s decision comes less than two months after 20-year-old Expavious Taylor was killed in downtown Fort Myers at Zombicon on Oct. 17. The investigation has not produced an arrest after speaking to witnesses. Five others were injured the same night.
Mayor Randy Henderson hopes the security cameras will discourage people from committing such acts of violence, but at the very least will help gather evidence in the event of a crime.
Paight agreed: “We’re trying to show the public that the city is doing everything it can.”
