HomePlug Powerline Alliance Inc., a global industry consortium that creates international specifications for high-speed powerline networking products and services, announced that GE’s Security business has joined its Implementers’ Forum Board of Directors.
The alliance has three groups focused on the development and promotion of interrelated powerline communications standards that will use HomePlug technology as the baseline for in-home data networking and content distribution, to-the-home access technology, and within-the-home infrastructure and inter-appliance communication. With that infrastructure in place, HomePlug-enabled products from companies like GE will be able to communicate with other consumer electronic products, personal computer platforms, security systems and general-purpose appliances by simply plugging them into an electrical outlet.
According to the alliance, the addition of GE to its board emphasizes the important role of HomePlug technology in the rapidly growing digital home market.
