GE Security is voluntarily recalling some of its carbon monoxide (CO) detectors because of a software problem that makes them ineffective after a year. The recall affects 74,000 ESL SafeAir 240-COE CO alarms manufactured between November 2000 and August 2002.
The date code is on the back of the alarm and reflects the week and year of manufacture. For example, the code “0045T” refers to the 45th week of 2000.
The detectors subject to recall fail to detect CO properly after a year because of a software error. In addition, they will not provide an end of life signal of other indications on malfunction even if the test button is pressed. GE says it has so far received only one report of an improperly operating alarm and no reports of injury.
To participate in the recall, contractors should contact (800) 648-7422 Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT.
