HAMMOND, Ind. — Following several municipalities throughout the nation, this city will place police surveillance cameras in an effort to combat crime.
City officials plan to install the cameras at four intersections within the coming weeks, reports the Associated Press. The cameras will transmit footage to the police dispatch center.
Numerous resident complaints about shootings and other crimes occurring near city parks prompted Hammond officials to implement a surveillance program, reports The Times of Munster. Officials hope to have the same success as Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood. A study released last year by the Urban Institute’s Justice Policy Center noted that crime dropped by 12% after installing cameras in the vicinity.
The city began testing the surveillance network a year ago. If the cameras effectively help fight crime, officials will likely place them in more locations.
