OAKLAND, Calif. — A hidden security camera was found in the weight room of the Oakland Athletics’ stadium, prompting the team to suspend its strength and conditioning coach.
According to the Yahoo! Sports report, the camera was installed on July 24 in the weight room of the O.co Coliseum so the coach, Michael Henriques, could observe players working out and rehabilitating injuries while he and the rest of the team were on the road. Shortly after it was installed, a player discovered the camera and reported the issue to the team’s union representative, who alerted the team.
“This was the misguided action of one employee,” says Billy Beane, the Athletics’ executive vice president of baseball operations. “We hired an independent investigator. While the employee’s intentions were good, his judgement was very poor.”
The report says that Beane was “furious” over the invasion of privacy.
The camera was operational for 21 hours.
Henriques is suspended while the independent law firm investigates the case. He will be allowed to return in a probationary capacity since his actions were not deemed to be malicious, the report states.
