AMARILLO, Texas – Windy conditions in the city of Amarillo have led to more false alarm calls in the area.

The Amarillo Police Department (APD) noted that high winds can cause door sensors to go off, depending on the type of alarm system homes and business have installed, NewsChannel10.com reports.

The high winds between 40 to 60 miles per hour have caused police to respond to dozens of intrusion alarm calls daily, and most of them are false.

Although police expect some false alarms, responding to the false calls takes away resources from actual emergencies.

The city allows alarm users five false alarms. After that, they are charged a fee of $50. Additionally, the city sends letters warning offenders to repair or solve the problem.

If alarm users don’t pay the fine, police will place them on a “do not respond” list.

APD encourages alarm users to discuss false alarm prevention with their security alarm companies.
