Hikvision Surveillance System Upgrade Brings WWII Battleship Into 21st Century

Hikvision, along with its integrator ADT/Protection 1, upgraded Battleship North Carolina’s surveillance system with 45 new IP cameras.

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Hikvision USA provided a new, high-resolution IP security system to upgrade security for the Battleship North Carolina, a national historic landmark here. The local ADT/Protection 1 integrator donated installation for the upgrade.

One of the most highly decorated battleships of World War II, the Battleship North Carolina is a memorial honoring the 11,000 North Carolina service members who perished in WWII, along with all veterans.

Visitor attractions onboard the stationary nine-level ship and museum include mess halls, the engine room, the bridge and the Combat Information Center.

“The combination of Hikvision camera models and thoughtful camera placement has produced a broad surveillance umbrella for the Battleship North Carolina landmark, and also has some amazing views,” says Jason Summers, commercial sales at ADT/Protection 1.

Summers says one challenge the integrator faced was removing the ship’s old cabling. “The USS North Carolina had a team of volunteers that handled cabling onboard the ship. Once the old coax cabling was removed, connecting the cameras and network was relatively easy.”

The surveillance system replacement, which comes after a major network upgrade last fall, included 45 new Hikvision cameras.

The new system consists of a mix of Hikvision 3-megapixel dome cameras, 2MP 30x optical zoom p/t/z cameras, 2MP motorized zoom bullet cameras and 2MP turret cameras that are placed throughout the main ship and the gift shop. Two Hikvision 32-channel NVRs with 6TB of storage provide recorded footage up to 40 days.

“Hikvision contributes to the communities where we live and work,” says Alex Asnovich, head of marketing, Hikvision North America. “With our integrators as partners, we are able to support the community and give back to memorials like the Battleship North Carolina.”
