Home Security and Energy Savings 2 Reasons for Smart Home Adoption, Study Finds

According to Transparency Market Research, security joins lighting, entertainment, power management and HVAC control as the top applications of smart home technology.

ALBANY, N.Y. — A recent study found that smart home adoption is driven by customers wanting increased controllability and security, as well as time-saving and energy-saving controls. The report was conducted by Transparency Market Research.

Other factors promoting the adoption of smart homes is an aging population, government initiatives and the inclusion of top electronic brands like Apple and Samsung, the report says. Government initiatives in North America include remotely controlling gas, water and power meters to fall into the smart grid with ease.

Security continues to be one of the top applications of smart home technology, as well as lighting; entertainment; power management; and heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) control. Security features include the use of sensors and alarms that keep the homeowner privy to any activity within the control premises.

North America is currently the leader in the smart homes market, followed closely by Europe and Asia-Pacific. The smart homes market is expected to see double digit growth percentages in developing countries in the next few years.
