ALBANY, N.Y. – Seven students at the State University of New York, located here, are the first to graduate with a newly created minor in homeland security and other emergency fields, the Associated Press reported.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Sunday that the students could play a vital role in responding to everything from extreme weather to terrorist threats.
More than 270 students enrolled for the first academic year of the College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity at the state university.
The governor announced plans for the college more than two years ago, according to AP.
A major in the field is awaiting approval from state education officials.
Twelve acres of the SUNY campus have been set aside for a building that will house the college as part of a new Emerging Technology and Entrepreneurship Complex.
