Honeywell Security & Custom Electronics recently disclosed its intent to phase out the current family of ALARMNET-C radios by the Feb. 18, 2008 deadline, as set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Also called the “Sunset Clause,” the FCC ruling requires that cellular companies continue to offer Advanced Mobile Phone Services (AMPS) at least until that date, after which they are free to cease support.
The ALARMNET-C radio products affected by this decision include the 7845CV2, 7845CZ, 7845CF and 7845CZF. According to Honeywell, the phase-out will be conducted in stages. With that in mind, Honeywell stopped taking orders for the 7845CV2 this past August. The remainder of the ALARMNET-C radios will be phased out as stock is depleted.
In place of the ALARMNET-C radios, Honeywell plans to implement a new series of cellular-based products. This will include a GSM digital radio communicator that will use General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) data transport and Short Message Service (SMS) back-up for redundancy and enhanced services. Honeywell will also offer a combination of GSM and Internet communicators.
