IBM, NATIONAL SEMICONDUCTOR TO CREATE HOME GATEWAY PLATFORM

NEW YORK

IBM and National Semiconductor Corp. have unveiled home gateway technology that, officials for both companies say, will enable Internet access and both wired and wireless control of common household appliances, such as lights, security systems, utility meters, air conditioners and entertainment systems.

The companies are creating a broadband Internet connectivity development platform for home gateways by combining National Semiconductor’s Internet appliance development platform—featuring the National Geode processor—and IBM’s WebSphere embedded software.

The open-standards platform, which will be available in August, is designed to help device manufacturers reduce gateway and application development time. So far, two Asian clients already have signed on to use the technology.

Consequently, the new platform will help companies reduce gateway and application development time while adhering to open standards based on applications from technology providers.
