IDIS Provides SB 507-Compliant Video Surveillance Solution for Texas School System

Installed by integrator partner PSX, IDIS technology is helping a school district comply with state requirements for security cameras in multiple special education classrooms.

EDNA, Texas – Video surveillance manufacturer IDIS and systems integrator PSX have collaborated to provide multiple security installations for the Edna Independent School District (ISD) in support of the district’s compliance with Texas Senate Bill 507 (SB 507) requirements.

Following a number of high-profile incidents of alleged abuse of sometimes non-communicative special needs students, Texas passed SB 507. The legislation requires districts to install audio and video surveillance equipment and recorders in select classrooms where special education services are provided if a parent, school board or staff member requests it.

The IDIS solution crafted by PSX meets Edna ISD’s SB 507 compliance requirements with a custom configuration of IDIS cameras and recorders. At the heart of the solution is the IDIS DirectIP Super Fisheye camera. The camera offers client, camera and mobile dewarping for a clearer picture and strongest possible assessment and documentation of incidents, according to the company.

The fisheye camera is also equipped with the company’s IDIS Smart UX Controls, which allow for real-time pointing and zooming, and two-way communication.

“In Edna ISD, the safety of our students, teachers and staff is a key part of our educational mission,” says Robert O’Connor, superintendent, Edna ISD. “When those in our schools, and the families that love them, know their environment is safe and secure, the educational mission can thrive. We have embraced the SB 507 requirements as yet another tool in ensuring an ideal learning environment for all, providing additional support and protection for our special needs population.”

Although SB 507 compliance has proven a challenge for some school districts, Alan Morris, vice president of sales for PSX, says Edna ISD officials have shown an uncompromising commitment to its special needs students through the selection of technology that “provides easy real-time review of classroom behavior and provides the best, clearest evidence possible should an incident occur.”

“I commend the vision shared by Superintendent O’Connor and the entire Edna ISD in selecting a forward-thinking surveillance system that is both highly technologically advanced and responsibly affordable,” Morris continues.

The IDIS’s end-to-end solution is differentiated by its ease of installation and use, as well as its lack of licensing and maintenance fees, making it a strong fit for budget-conscious school districts, according to the company.

“Many of us are parents and we all treasure the diverse student populations in our communities,” says Keith Drummond, senior director, IDIS America. “Our highly customizable, easily scaled technology is ideal for applications such as these, and we at IDIS are especially proud to know that our latest-generation IDIS technology will be used to help ensure the highest classroom standards are met in Edna ISD special education programs and others like it.”
