Illinois Considers Requiring CO Detectors in All Homes

SPRINGFIELD, Ill.
Published: March 28, 2005

The state of Illinois is considering requiring carbon monoxide (CO) detectors in all residences. The Illinois Senate’s Housing and Community Affairs Committee passed a bill on to the full Senate a bill designed to protect residents from CO poisoning by requiring the CO detectors in homes.

Illinois’ largest city, Chicago, has required CO detectors since 1994. New York City instituted a similar requirement on Nov. 1.

In addition, the Colorado city of Hanson will be putting before voters a measure that would require CO detectors in most new homes.

Among states, Alaska started a requirement this year for CO detectors in homes, while Connecticut is considering a bill to require CO detectors in all new homes.
