Illinois Cop Indicted After Cashing ADT Checks

MELROSE PARK, Ill.

A former Melrose Park, Ill., police officer has been
indicted for allegedly cashing $36,000 in stolen checks
written by ADT Security to the police department earlier
this year, the Chicago Tribune reports. The five
checks, each worth about $7,000, were ADT’s monthly fees to
have its alarm equipment installed in the department’s
emergency center, ensuring ADT and the police were notified
when a home or business was burglarized.

Police officials became aware of the situation when they
noticed ADT had not made some monthly payments. Once ADT
supplied returned checks, the department began the
investigation that led them to 30-year veteran officer
James Caputo.

Caputo has been charged with theft, forgery and official
misconduct and was fired June 10.
