With many businesses’ alarm systems linked to the Lake in
the Hills police station, officers have showed business
representatives a demonstration of live alarm-activated
video surveillance – the future of law enforcement for the
village, located 50 miles northwest of Chicago. Such
businesses
can add security cameras that could be tied to the police
department’s wireless communication systems, allowing them
to view crimes live as soon as an alarm sounds.
According to The Daily Herald, the recent
demonstration featured a simulated bank robbery, as well as
a description of the wireless camera surveillance system
slated to be complete by September. The dramatized robbery
took place at the village’s public works department, from
which the live streaming video was hooked up.
Police, who have worked on this system for a month, hope
wide adoption will reduce false alarms and say it could be
a first for Illinois police departments. Consultation and
equipment costs can vary from $2,600 to $5,000 depending on
each business’ needs. The police department will not
require a contract.
