The MX4 mechanical filter LXR image sensor by Extreme CCTV of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, is designed to withstand severe conditions in outdoor applications. For this reason, the MX4 was chosen for use at Mount Erebus in Antarctica, where the devices capture video surveillance of eruption sequences.
According to the company, the resulting video sequences are transmitted to a central location using a radio-based video transmission system. The system operates on 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz. The images are then sent to the Geochronology Research Laboratory in New Mexico using a satellite link.
