Integrator Puts Newly Seismic-Certified Fire/Life-Safety System to Work

NORTHFORD, Conn. — NOTIFIER by Honeywell announces that all its fire alarm and emergency communications systems have earned Int’l Building Code (IBC) seismic certification.

The Certified Seismic Qualification Agency tested all the fire alarm and digital voice command systems, according to the company. Many areas throughout the nation now require seismic-certified fire alarm systems to protect hospitals, police and fire stations, and more.

“This seismic standard is fairly new to the fire alarm industry,” says NOTIFIER Product Manager Dan Corbett. “But given the recent seismic events here and around the world, we expect requirements for this certification to become more common and widespread.”

The recent IBC seismic certification came right on time for Newark, Calif.-based systems integrator Signawest System. During a fire alarm upgrade at Saint Rose Hospital in Hayward, Calif., the company had to overcome a hurdle, says Aileen Laforga, systems engineer, Signawest Systems.

“In our area, , if you have any type of electrical panel that’s more than 20 pounds, seismic certification is required,” she says.

Because of the facility’s size, Signawest planned to use the NOTIFIER NFS2-3030 panel to upgrade the system. “It had to be seismic certified,” Laforga says. “No other system could accommodate the size of the hospital, so the news of the certification was very timely.”
