It Takes a Thief to Buy an Alarm System

LONDON

Across the Atlantic, it seems that some of the most loyal customers of burglar alarm systems are the burglars themselves. A survey conducted of current and former thieves, as well as law-abiding citizens, by a British alarm company found that more than half had an alarm system in their home.

The survey by London-based alarm firm Micromark, reported by The Sunday Times, showed that 54 percent of burglars surveyed say they use a home alarm. That compares to 34 percent of ordinary homeowners who reported having a system.

The disparity is even greater when it comes to home CCTV. Thirty-one percent of the thieves said they had fitted CCTV systems in their homes compared to just 4 percent of the “good guys.”
