Johnson Controls Named One of ’40 Best Corporations for Diversity’

Integrator Johnson Controls announces it has been named one of the 40 Best Companies for Diversity and among the top 15 for supplier diversity by Black Enterprise magazine, a leading business and investment publication for African-Americans.

The latest recognition of Johnson Controls’ diversity initiatives was based on an evaluation of diversity programs and results of a survey of 1,000 of America’s largest publicly traded companies and of 40 leading global companies with significant U.S. operations, according to the editors of . The results will be published in the magazine’s July issue.

“Our Values promote a diverse, inclusive workplace with global opportunities for teamwork, leadership and growth,” says Charles Harvey, vice president, Diversity and Public Affairs for Johnson Controls. “Our innovative program to recruit and develop diverse suppliers, begun in the early 1990s, has made us one of only 13 U.S. companies to annually purchase more than $1 billion in goods and services from minority- and women-owned firms.”

The companies that made the magazine’s “40 Best” list were lauded in four key categories: supplier diversity; senior management, board of directors and employee base. Moreover, the editors say, select companies were “far more likely than most corporations to have mechanisms in place to strategically plan and implement diversity activities and to measure the effectiveness of their programs.”

Other recent acknowledgements of Johnson Controls’ diversity commitment included 2007 Corporation of the Year by the Tennessee Minority Supplier Development Council; 2007 Diversity Leadership award from Diversity Best Practices and Business Women’s Network; and 2006 Corporate Diversity award from the World Diversity Leadership Council. The company’s annual diversity purchasing results have placed it in the Billion Dollar Roundtable every year since 2003.
