Just Some of the News That’s Fit to Print

LAS VEGAS

Each year news and information at ISC West emanates from numerous press conferences held by manufacturers touting their latest products, along with discussing corporate strategies and market trends. Members of the SSI editorial staff attended several such gatherings this year, including the following meetings.

At the Pelco press conference, Dean Meyer addressed the company’s renewed focus on IP video technologies. According to Meyer, it is time for the company to take share in the movement and not just promote it. As part of this effort, Pelco will devote its engineering efforts mostly in the IP realm while still protecting the investment of analog customers. The company is prepared to dedicate the necessary cost and education needed to help switch customers from analog to IP video. Pelco’s two hot new technologies are its Endura™ IP video security system and Sarix™ next-generation video security imaging technology.

HID Global hosted a strategy briefing and panel discussion under the working theme, “Secure Identity Strategies for Adaptive Authentication.” President and CEO Denis Hébert talked about the strategic framework of the company’s latest developments and future marketplace positioning, which was followed by panelists discussing the future prospects for converged environments. The moderated panel featured subject-matter experts from Dell, Lenel, Convergint Technologies, Tx Systems and HID Global. Convergence was a main topic for the panelists, especially where it concerns the “HID on the Desktop” initiative, which neatly links HID’s installed physical security base with logical access control. The model turns an existing ID card into a credential that provides computer and network access. To help facilitate market penetration, HID has partnered with Dell. Select Dell® Latitude have an embedded contactless smart card reader that supports multiple ISO-compliant and industry standard contactless smart card technologies, including HID’s iCLASS®.

Samsung|GVI held a press conference during ISC West to announce some exciting new technology and products, including its A1 camera chip. GVI Security Solutions CEO Steve Walin hosted the gathering and explained how the chip, which is expected to begin shipping in Samsung / GVI devices in late summer, will enhance image quality substantially and introduce video analytics into analog cameras. He emphasized the continuing viability of analog cameras and their enduring dominance in the field, particularly with how economics are slowing the adoption of IP cameras. At the same time, Walin acknowledged the company was keeping pace with converging technologies by unveiling three new IP cameras, including a megapixel model, high-speed DVRs and quick-install dome cameras. The press conference also included a plaque presentation to Walin from a Samsung representative to commemorate GVI’s 10-year anniversary working with the Korean electronics giant.

DSC, a Tyco company, released its new two-way wireless alarm panel, Alexor, on the first day of the show (April 1) before regular attendees were allowed through the gates. The company chose the name Alexor to represent its “great protector” qualities and “power of speed.” The pre-show conference included a Hollywood-like movie of brazen warriors battling to the death to further promote the product’s protector branding. In cooperation with the Orange County Choppers, DSC revealed a stunning custom-built motorcycle sporting the Alexor symbol. The company also hosted an attendee competition to promote the alarm panel’s speedy usability. The contestant with the fasted time was awarded with a leather Alexor jacket, and custom-painted Alexor alarm panel, and the opportunity to install the alarm panel at Orange County Choppers’ New York store.
