The Commonwealth of Kentucky has enacted a statewide
certification program for low-voltage installers, which
will exempt electronic life safety, security and systems
professionals from the state’s Electrical License Law. The
Electrical License Law, enacted in April, would have
required low-voltage installers to become licensed
electricians, Kentucky Burglar & Fire Alarm Association
(KBFAA) President Doug Vernon told the National Burglar &
Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA).
NBFAA’s governmental affairs department and the KBFAA
worked to have low-voltage contractors excluded from the
law and proposed a separate certification program for such
individuals. The certification requirements were drafted
and approved by Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher.
To earn certification, installers will need two years of
experience and successful completion of a testing program.
Certification will be administered by the Kentucky Public
Protection & Regulation Cabinet, Department of Housing,
Buildings and Construction.
