LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Fire Department plans to offer residents free smoke alarms in an effort to reduce residential fire fatalities.
Residents in need of a smoke alarm can go to any of the 106 fire stations throughout the city to get a free device, CBS Los Angeles reports.
The city decided to launch this new initiative following a July 29 fire that destroyed a home that had no functioning smoke alarms.
This year, 20 people have died in building fires, including a 98-year-old woman who died from smoke inhalation. The majority of these deaths occurred due to a lack of working smoke alarms, according to city officials.
The fire alarms will be available to the public free of charge courtesy of First Alert. The home security firm donates 500 alarm every month to LAFD.
