L.A.‘s Verified Response Policy Pushed Back

Verified response in Los Angeles was expected to go into effect April 15, the Los Angeles Police Department said in February, but city officials say that’s more likely to happen in May or June.
Joe Gunn, executive director of the Los Angeles Police Commission, said, presently, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is in the process of alerting its officers to the new policy. “We are hesitant on any motion, but in any event we’re starting to prepare educational materials for the public and planning for the training. We expect the policy to be implemented May 15 or June 15.”
Pushing back the policy’s effective date eliminates some concern by members of the city’s burglar alarm task force and the alarm industry of possibly not being able to have the police commission consider the group’s report on alternative false alarm reduction measures.
A final version of the task force’s report is scheduled to be reviewed first by the city council April 20. The council will only then be able to request—not mandate—the police commission to either consider all, some or none of the recommendations.
However, “The LAPD announced its intention to implement the policy mid-May to mid-June, but made it clear they expect to implement the policy they adopted previously, even if the task force recommends other options,” the Greater Los Angeles Security Alarm Association (GLASAA) stated in a letter alerting its members.
The task force was formed by the city council after the police commission gave the council 60 days from its Feb. 4 meeting, when the new policy was unanimously approved, to come up with alternative solutions. The group is made up of Los Angeles residents, alarm representatives and city and law enforcement officials, including Gunn.
GLASAA also stated that California Alarm Association (CAA) Vice President George De Marco, who has been presenting statements on behalf of the industry, told the task force at its last meeting that the city could eliminate 35 percent of the false dispatches if the current ordinance was enforced.
