After finding success with public video surveillance, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is planning on implementing a public CCTV system in the City of Angels’ notorious downtown skid row. By a 5-0 vote, Los Angeles’ Police Commission approved on Nov. 22 a new surveillance program to crack down on drug abuse and the dumping of homeless to include camera watching over skid row.
The Los Angeles Times reports that similar to the CCTV system installed on Hollywood Boulevard ( profiled in the September issue of SSI.), the skid row system will be funded through a public-private partnership.
The installation of the cameras, to be installed by January, will be paid for by the Central City East Association, which represents several businesses in Downtown Los Angeles.
