The state of Maine has adopted new fire and building codes
developed by the National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA). The 2003 editions of NFPA 1, Uniform Fire
Code (UFC); NFPA 101, Life Safety Code; and the
new NFPA 5000, Building Construction and Safety Code
all went into effect earlier this year.
NFPA 1, Uniform Fire Code is the end product of
collaborative efforts between the NFPA and the Western Fire
Chiefs Association. It combines two of the most widely
adopted fire codes in the country, the NFPA 1, Fire
Prevention Code and the Uniform Fire Code.
NFPA 101, Life Safety Code is one of the nation’s
oldest safety standards addressing the safety of lives in
new and existing buildings. NFPA 5000, Building
Construction and Safety Code, covers all aspects of
building construction and design as well as the design of
various integrated building systems.
The three codes are part of an all-encompassing collection
of construction codes developed by the NFPA and other
leading code developers. Titled the Comprehensive
Construction Codes (C3), it is the only full set of
construction codes created through processes accredited by
the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
