Most homes and residential buildings in Massachusetts will now be required to have carbon monoxide (CO) detectors under a new law. Known as “Nicole’s Law,” it requires residential structures with enclosed parking or heating equipment to have CO detectors.
Massachusetts Gov. Milt Romney signed the bill into law on Nov. 4, according to the Boston Globe. The law will be enforced through local fire departments, which will inspect residences after they have been sold or transferred.
The law is named for 7-year-old Nicole Garofalo, who died last winter when she suffocated on CO in her own home after snow blocked up a gas boiler.
