Q: I have some basement windows that need security on them. Any ideas on an inexpensive way to protect them?
A: In addition to the to obvious window magnetic contacts, I can think of a few popular methods. First keep in mind, you may need to protect not only the casement window, but the frame to the structure as well. I have been hearing more and more stories about how easy it is to pry out the entire window and frame on some of the newer built homes.
Probably the most “down and dirty” installation method I know is to provide a nice wire lacing across the opening. This may not be very eye appealing and would be for windows not in plain view. Simply, staple thin, breakable solid core insulated wire (smaller than 24 gauge) across the opening. Do a check or diamond pattern. Any break in the wire and the alarm circuit is violated.
Another method is to use a spring load bar device called the “barrier bar.” You cut it to size (slightly over size) and place across the casement window opening.
Last would be to screen the window with alarm screening. Many suppliers allow you to remove the existing screen, fold it up and send it in. Then, a new one will be delivered as an alarm screen … very good for windows that will be opened often.
Q: I am having trouble with a customer and his employees constantly tripping the cash drawer money clips all the time. Any suggestions?
A: Place two clips in the drawers in parallel in an alarm circuit. Wire them so that both have to have the money removed to trip the alarm. If the money is pulled out of one, the clerk should notice before the other has the money pulled out. If you are using wireless clips, then you will have to have a multichannel receiver and wire the clips in parallel to the hold-up alarm circuit.
