WILMINGTON, Mass. – The Massachusetts Burglar and Fire alarm association (MBFAA) has changed its name to the Massachusetts Systems Contractors Association (MSCA). The renaming of the group was prompted by a U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) ruling in 2002 to establish a new job classification and apprenticeship occupation to classify voice, data and video workers.
According to the group, the DOL designated the new job classification as an electronic systems technician (EST). The Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Electricians approved the EST educational curriculum as meeting the requirements for systems contractors and systems technicians in the commonwealth.
Systems contractors and systems technicians specialize in designing, integrating, installing, programming, monitoring and maintaining “power limited” electronic systems for commercial and residential applications. The MSCA says the profession will help expand the skilled technical labor force desperately needed by electronic systems contractors as they cope with growing demand for electronic systems.
The association plans to offer EST curriculum for people interested in joining the trade. For more information, visit www.masystemscontractors.org.
