McCarran Int’l Airport to Install Biometric Identity Verification System
The Clear biometric identity verification system is scheduled to launch this summer at McCarran International Airport.
LAS VEGAS – The Clark County Commission has approved a lease agreement with Alclear LLC to launch a biometric identity verification system this summer at McCarran International Airport.
Alclear operates the Clear identity verification platform, which scans fingerprints and irises at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints at the airport, Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
The platform will cost users a yearly subscription fee of $179. Additional family members will cost $50, while children under 18 are free.
Passengers can enroll online, but the application must be completed in person by providing a passport, driver’s license or a military ID.
Customers will receive a smart card that is filled with personal biometric information. While going through the ID verification line at the airport, users will give the cards to TSA agents, who will scan it at a kiosk. After the scanner reads the card, the passenger has a fingerprint or iris scanned to match and verify identity. Passengers are then directed to security lines.
Passengers who have used the service say the Clear scanning lines are considerably shorter than other ID verification lines.
McCarran would be the tenth airport to launch the Clear network program. Airports in Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver, Houston, San Antonio, San Francisco, San Jose, Calif., Orlando and Westchester County Airport in New York.
The Los Angeles International Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport are reportedly considering adding the Clear service to their locations.
