Miami to Install Video Surveillance System

MIAMI, Fla.

The Miami Police Department is planning to install a surveillance camera system in parts of downtown.

The cameras will be constantly monitored by the police department’s communications center and will cover three areas: the Biscayne Boulevard corridor in downtown Miami, Brickell Avenue banking district and the core of downtown.

“We have one camera up and running right now, which is a demo camera on the roof of our building,” says Tony Utset, executive assistant to the police chief. “Everybody that sees it is amazed at how much one camera can see in comparison to one person. So, it’s definitely a force multiplier in that aspect.”

The project is projected to be done in five phases, taking several years to complete. The first phase will be paid for with a $400,000 grant from the Department of Homeland Security.
