MONROEVILLE, Pa. – Monroeville Police announced they have installed a series of high-definition cameras in about a dozen locations around the municipality.
The cameras are monitored by the Monroeville Police Department and can record and store footage for up to 30 days.
Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. said the cameras are necessary to monitor and identify criminal elements among the thousands of transients in the area.
“The safety of a community should be an inclusive process and cameras are an important part of that process because we see what the camera sees in an objective fashion,” Zappala told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The cameras are installed in highly trafficked routes that lead in and out of the municipality. License plate recognition software will alert police if a monitored vehicles passes through a virtual checkpoint.
“These additional cameras are a top priority for our community and will be a very effective tool for our police force,” says Monroeville Mayor Greg Erosenko.
