The family of murder victim Teri Lee has sued ADT Security Services arguing the system installed in Lee’s home failed the night her ex-boyfriend entered the house and killed Lee and her boyfriend, according to a newspaper report.

The suit filed in the U.S. District Court in Minneapolis alleges that ADT failed to correctly install the $2,500 system and that the company told Lee the system would be connected to a wireless backup system, according to the Star Tribune.

The backup system allegedly never alerted Lee when ex-boyfriend Steven Van Keuren severed the outside phone lines before breaking into Lee’s house. The suit also alleges the system’s glass-breakage sensors and motion-detectors failed to operate.

ADT has filed a countersuit contending if the system didn’t perform as expected, the contract signed by Lee limits its liability to $500. The countersuit also claims the contract stated that human error is possible and that ADT cannot cover all possible losses, according to the newspaper.

Attorney William Harper, who is representing the Lee family, told the newspaper he is seeking millions for wrongful death, emotional distress and possibly punitive damages.
