NBFAA Conducts Changing of the Guard

SILVER SPRING, Md.

As the month changes from June to July, there is a changing of the guard taking place at the top of the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA). Cecil Hogan completes his two-year tenure as NBFAA president on July 1. As he looks back at his tenure, Hogan’s first thought is that two years go by too quickly.

“It was a hell of a ride and it didn’t seem like it was two years, but we got an awful lot accomplished,” Hogan, a member of Security Sales & Integration‘s Editorial Advisory Board told SSI.

Scot Colby, head of Shreveport, La.-based Bayou Security Systems Inc., succeeds Hogan as the NBFAA’s 36th president, while the NBFAA’s new executive committee begins its tenure.

Hogan, head of Security Consultants Inc. of Memphis, Tenn., looks at his top accomplishments as helping to start up the Security America Risk Retention Group insurance program for dealers, while revitalizing the NBFAA’s research arm – the Alarm Industry Research and Educational Foundation (AIREF). “What we wanted to do is get back to research and education,” Hogan says of AIREF.

Hogan adds he expects his successor Colby to continue the initiatives of these past two years. On issue that may take up some of Colby’s time is the NBFAA’s relationship with state associations. “It’s been rocky at times with some of the states, but we realize that we need to change the way it works. We’re going to have to get closer to the states in some ways and further away in others,” says Hogan, who used the relation between state governments and the federal government as an example. “We need to clarify what is the nation’s job and the state’s job and how the two relate.”
