Neptune, N.J., Court Adjourned After Work Crew Sets Off Alarm

Published: September 30, 2000

NEPTUNE, N.J.—Chaos ensued at a courthouse when its security system alarmed, forcing 25 people to evacuate the building. Officials determined the alarm was false and were able to pinpoint the exact cause. Due to a lack of communication, construction crews failed to notify the proper authorities before beginning a project that set off the court’s system. A contractor was using spray paint to mark which walls needed to come down. Particles from the can of paint got into the fire alarm system and caused it to sound.
