Iridian Technologies and Joh. Enschede Security Solutions announce that they have delivered an automated border crossing system (ABC system) for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The system is based on a combination of iris recognition and smart card technology.

The ABC system is considered a highly secure method of border control that speeds the way for travelers and is unique in the Netherlands. The system is already operational. During trials, passengers from EEC member countries can enroll in the iris recognition system. This includes citizens of the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Austria, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. The system’s use will encompass both border control and authorized staff access to restricted areas; all restricted areas are expected to use iris recognition for access by the middle of 2002.

System participants will receive a secure smart card containing a unique IrisCode and personal information that will be compatible with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. The iris code will be based on a combination of 247 independent variables measured in each iris. Verification will feature a unique 1:1 recognition application stored in the smart card.
