New Area Code Overlay Implemented in L.A. County
LAS ANGELES
Los Angeles County residents in the 310 area code began
seeing a difference in how they dial numbers July 26. As
of that date, residents and businesses in the 310 area
code must dial 1, the area code and then the seven-digit
local number. This change paves the way for a new area
code, 424, that is to include new telephone lines and
services in the same geographic area. It also means alarm
companies need to reprogram thousands of alarm panels with
updated dialing information.
Phone numbers that use the new 424 area code may beginuse in the first of August. These numbers are to be sharedwith the same local calling area as 310.
Phone companies have already implemented 50 area codeoverlays throughout the U.S. Overlays are necessary tomake room for additional telephone numbers for bothlandline and wireless communication carriers.
