New Security Group Aims to Bring Together Technology Solutions

SAN DIEGO

A coalition of security industry, corporate, government and
law enforcement leaders has formed a new organization
dedicated to the development of more dual-usage security
solutions. The Security Network announced its formation
Nov. 15 and is an offshoot of the First Annual Security
Summit, a meeting of industry, government and academic
leaders that
was held
in July
.

Funded by its members, which will include companies, state
and federal agencies, and private individuals, The Security
Network will function as a national public/private
partnership that will host the second Security Summit next
June in San Diego. Security Network officials say the goal
of the organization will be to provide a forum
and “clearing house” for security technologies to come
together and become more efficient toward improving
regional security.

Michael Jones – a familiar name in the electronic security
industry as president of financial services provider
ProFinance Associates – will serve as the first chairman of
The Security Network’s Board of Directors. Jones says the
new organization will be a positive to the electronic
security industry, as it will help speed up the
introduction of new technologies into the security market.
He says many small- to medium-sized manufacturers are
developing technologies that aren’t reaching the market
because those companies don’t know how to reach potential
buyers.

“Things are developed on one side that don’t go to the
other side. We want to promote rapid commercialization of
technologies and services,” Jones told Security Sales &
Integration
. “This will be a forum to discuss what the
needs are, find out who’s working on it and bring those
companies together.”

While based in San Diego and consisting initially of a
majority of San Diego-based members, Jones says the
organization aims to attract members from across the United
States. The Security Network will serve as a test bed for
new technologies by utilizing state and federal grants. It
will also sponsor special interest groups (SIGs) that will
address security concerns across multiple industry
segments.

A focal point of the new group will be The Security Summit.
More than 150 attended the first summit July 1 in San
Diego, collaborating on multisegment Homeland Security
solutions. The second summit will be a two-day event – from
June 29 to 30 – in San Diego.

Jones sees the Summit filling a need other security shows
are unable to provide. “ASIS is a great show, but it’s
mostly technology providers talking to end users and it’s
providers talking to channel distribution at the ISC
shows,” Jones says. “There is no place where providers of
technology can talk to each other.”
