VERONA, N.J. – The police department here is asking area residents and business owners to join a voluntary security camera registration program to assist with criminal investigations. Video surveillance footage has become a crucial element in investigating and solving crimes, Verona authorities say.

When a crime occurs, police say they will be able to easily identify cameras in the area and enlist the help of those participating in the program to provide video evidence and potentially solve a crime. Registration for the program is strictly voluntary.
Participants can be removed from the program at any time and all information can be rescinded. The program prohibits the Verona Police Department to access cameras remotely; it would simply indicate where cameras are located and allow the department to access registrants’ contact information should a crime occur in that area. The security camera footage will only be reviewed with the permission of the resident or business owner.
To participate, the VPD has posted a registration form on its Web site.
