New Orleans the Latest City to Encourage Registration of Private Security Cameras

The program is strictly voluntary and police only access video if given permission by the owner.

NEW ORLEANS — In keeping with a trend happening around the nation, the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) is asking for homeowners and businesses to register their private surveillance cameras to help investigate crimes.

The NOPD’s 8th district has gone door to door in the neighborhood of Marigny asking people to register their cameras with the SafeCam NOLA program, which provides police with contact information for those with working security cameras, according to WWL in New Orleans.

“It just helps us so much more with being able to quickly obtain descriptions, put out perpetrator information. It’s just another tool for us,” said NOPD Commander Jeff Walls. “It’s an eye on the street, 24 hours a day.”

It does not appear the program provides any rebates for the installation and registry of surveillance cameras like in other cities such as Washington, D.C.

The door-to-door tactic worked when the NOPD informed Jeff Bromberger, owner of The Maison, a live music venue. Bromberger was previously unaware of the SafeCam NOLA program, but when they explained it to him, he registered.

“As soon as they told us about the program, to me it made perfect sense,” Bromberger said.

For those who are unsure of registering their camera because of privacy reasons, Walls insists it’s a voluntary program and that police won’t access video without the permission of the camera owners, according to the report.

“This just gives us the ability to contact them,” Walls said of the program. “We’re not going into their computer. We’re not doing anything like that.”
