QUINCY, Mass. – The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is calling for nominations for the 2025 James M. Shannon Advocacy Medal, which “recognizes fire and life safety advocates who have made significant contributions to reducing losses from fire, electrical and other hazards while furthering the NFPA mission.”
The nominee application is available for download and can be emailed to [email protected] until the submission period closes on Friday, Feb. 21.
The advocacy medal “honors an individual or group that shares the values of former NFPA president James Shannon,” according to the association announcement. During his 12-year tenure as president, Shannon was recognized for his “exceptional record of advocacy to reduce fire loss,” most notably by spearheading the Coalition for Fire-Safe Cigarettes and advocating for fire sprinklers in all new homes.
Why NFPA Awards the Shannon Advocacy Medal
“Every year, we are inspired by the nominations we receive for the Shannon Advocacy Medal,” says Lorraine Carli, vice president of outreach and advocacy at NFPA, in the association announcement. “A nominee’s years of efforts, ranging from promoting home sprinkler installation, championing the use of the latest codes and standards, to educating the public on reducing the threat of wildfire in their communities, are worthy of recognition.
“Through this award, we are honored to recognize unwavering dedication to improving public safety and strengthening our nation’s fire service,” she says.
NFPA considers nominees who are fire service members or any individual or group whose advocacy efforts meet the award’s criteria. The medal recipient will be announced and receive their award during the NFPA Conference & Expo in Las Vegas June 16-18. Previous recipients have worked to improve firefighter safety, increase the use of home fire sprinklers and advocated for updated codes, among other activities, according to the NFPA.
