QUINCY, Mass. – The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) will host a Single Exit Stair Symposium at its headquarters on Sept. 11-12, 2024.
This event “will bring together experts and stakeholders from diverse fields to discuss the implications of proposed legislation in several states to increase the allowable height of apartment buildings constructed with a single exit staircase,” according to the association announcement.

The NFPA Single Exit Stair Symposium “is designed to gather information and foster a balanced discussion on the issue,” according to the association announcement.
“By bringing together stakeholders with varying perspectives on the topic, NFPA aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the potential fire and life safety implications of these legislative changes,” the announcement says.
Following the symposium, NFPA will publish a report that can be used by policymakers “to better understand the issue from a fire and life safety standpoint,” according to the association announcement. This report “will also serve as a valuable resource for informing future discussions within the codes and standards development process.”
