NFPA Warns Frying Turkeys May Go Up in Flames

As the nation celebrates Thanksgiving, the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) is reminding consumers to be sure their turkey day doesn’t go up in flames. The NFPA has urged people not to use turkey fryers when preparing holiday meals because of the dangers frequently associated with the devices.

The NFPA says tests have shown the fryers have a high risk of tipping over, overheating or spilling hot oil. That can result in fires, burns, or other injuries. Underwriters Laboratories Inc. has refused to certify any turkey fryer.

In its warning, the NFPA adds cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Unattended cooking is the primary cause of these fires.
