NFPA’s Fire Prevention Week to Focus on Candle Safety

QUINCY, Mass.
Published: June 21, 2005

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has
announced the focus of its annual Fire Prevention Week for
this year. Running from Oct. 9-15, the week will center in
2005 on efforts to reduce the number of fires caused by
home candles. The association reports that nine out of 10
candle-fires occur in homes and rates of those fires have
risen steadily since 1990.

Forty-one percent of home candle fires start in the bedroom and result in a quarter of associated fire deaths.

The NFPA analysis of home candle fires cites leaving candles burning unattended and using them for light as major concerns.
