NIST Document Offers Guidelines for Federal Agency PIV Systems
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently published a 16-page report entitled Special Publication 800-96. This document details performance and security specifications for Personal Identity Verification (PIV) cards and readers now used within federal agencies and other concerns.
NIST created the guidelines in response to Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12, which requires PIV systems to be interoperable between federal agencies. Nongovernmental organizations, however, are encouraged to use these recommendations on a volunteer basis, as the document is not subject to copyright.
The draft is now available online in pdf format for public comments for three weeks. The comment period will end on June 13, says NIST.
