N.J. RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES TO USE 10-DIGIT DIALING DEC. 1

Businesses and residents in northern and central New Jersey will begin using 10-digit phone dialing with all numbers beginning Dec. 1 to allow for three new area codes. Remember to update fire/burg control communicators! Phone customers in these regions will be forced to use 10-digit dialing for all calls due to an overlay system whereby new area codes will be used in addition to the old ones. Specifically, 862 will overlay (be added to) 973; 848 will overlay 732; and 551 will overlay 201.
According to Verizon, the new 10-digit dialing will not result in any change in pricing for phone service. The change will affect all preprogrammed phone dialing. After Dec. 1, any call made without the area code will result in a recorded message to the dialer instructing the dialer to hang up and redial, this time including the full 10-digit number. This will require security companies to reprogram all digital dialers in systems they have installed in the affected area codes.
