Town officials in Huntersville, N.C., are considering an
ordinance that would charge residents who have multiple
false alarms.
The Charlotte Observer reports police officers
responded to 2,250 false alarms at homes and businesses
last year. The false alarm responses amounted to about 13
percent of the department’s calls for service, according to
police Capt. Randy Pennington.
“We’ve had people set them off intending to see how fast
the police come,” he said.
Pennington worked with a representative from the
security alarm industry to draft an ordinance, the
newspaper reports. The false alarm ordinance will likely
come before the town board in October.
