An interagency subcommittee of the White House’s National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) has issued a draft document that lists recommended standards to enable government agencies to share biometric data.
The NSTC biometric and identity management subcommittee is requesting public comments on the draft by March 10.
The NSTC Policy for Enabling the Development, Adoption and Use of Biometric Standards established a framework to reach interagency consensus on biometric standards for the federal government. The standard will ensure deferral agencies can collect and exchange different systems of biometric data in standardized forms.
The subcommittee consists of 15 U.S. government agencies and five organizations in the Executive Office of the President.
Specific sections of the registry recommend standards for data collection, storage and exchange; transmission profiles; requirements for identifying government employees and contractors; “plug-and-play” equipment standards; conformance and performance testing methodology standards and references.
